Stand-Up Comedy Showcase Vs. A Feature Show
There are two main types of stand-up comedy shows out there, and we wanted to set the record straight for what's what. Some comedy show flyers, posts, or events will tell you the difference, sometimes you can figure it out pretty easily. A stand-up comedy showcase and a stand-up comedy feature show differ mainly in structure, lineup, and performance length.
Showcase Show
This is a great way to see a bunch of variety of comedy all in one show. The hope is that the lineup is diverse enough to give you a little something from a few different perspectives.
What specifically is a Showcase:
- Multiple comedians perform shorter sets (typically 5-15 minutes each).
- Often features a mix of new and experienced comedians.
- Can include up-and-coming talent, open mic regulars, and professional comics testing new material.
- The lineup is more varied, with no single headliner.
- Common in comedy clubs, festivals, at bars, distilleries, and breweries, as well as special event nights.
Feature Show
- Typically consists of a host (MC), a feature act, and a headliner.
- The feature act (also called a "middle" or "support" act) performs a longer set (15-30 minutes).
- The headliner is the main act, performing the longest set (typically 45-60 minutes).
- More structured and polished, with experienced comedians.
- Often ticketed with a well-known comedian as the main attraction.
There are lots of other types of comedy shows out there as well, such as Roast Battles, Improv + Stand-Up, and every once in a while, you'll get a show with some music artists mixed in. There's something for everyone out there.
Would you rather attend a showcase with variety or a feature show with a solid headliner?
